TECHNOLOGY
Paradise Elementary is firmly committed to fostering technological literacy in our students. New curriculum documents increasingly support the integration of technology outcomes within the regular curriculum. To that end, Paradise Elementary developed and implemented a technology plan for the integration of computer technology into our school.
One of the main goals of this plan was realized in February of 2000, with the implementation of a Windows NT, computer network with a high-speed connection to the Internet. All computers in the computer lab, resource center, and office are now linked through the school's network. We also have network connections in the staff room, multipurpose room and gymnasium.
All users of the school network are subject to the rules and conditions outlined in our school acceptable use policy. These rules and conditions are based on school board policy, and an acceptable use contract must be signed by both parents and students before access to school computers is permitted.
The network allows students and staff to
- share resources
- store and retrieve files from any school computer
- search the library database from any school computer
- access the Internet through our high speed cable connection
- have access to a personal e-mail account
Our computer lab, found at the back our Resource Center, houses 30 computers, an L.C.D. unit, a scanner, and a network laser printer. Lab time is available to classes through a sign up system. The next major focus of our school technology plan involves replacing the older equipment in our lab with newer machines that can support our extensive collection of software.
The Learning Resource center is fully automated using the Library Pro software. There are 3 network computers in the Resource Center which are used for circulation of books, database searches, research, and for accessing electronic reference materials.
Personal computers are also used in Kindergarten, Special Education, and Challenging Needs classrooms.
Technology Committee
Paradise Elementary has a dynamic technology plan that is implemented and reviewed by members of the technology committee. This committee is comprised of 4 staff members:
- Ms. Rhona Oldford - Learning Resource Teacher
- Mr. Barry Jenkins - Assistant Principal / Grade 6 teacher
- Mr. Chris Butler - Grade 4 teacher
- Ms. Valerie Spencer Barron- Grade 4 Teacher
The committee assists with purchasing decisions and the installation and maintenance of hardware and software. They also provide peer support, and help with professional development initiatives in the area of computer technology.
Science and Technology Day
Science and Technology Day is used to focus the elementary students on the technology and underlying science concepts used in their daily lives as well as to introduce them to new learning experiences.
Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 are divided into multi-grade teams who move from one hands-on center to another. Teachers guide the students through interactive experiences where cooperation and collaboration are emphasized.
